ABOUT NEWFIT

MISSION

To spark a lifelong practice and passion for wellness through fitness and health education programming.

VISION

We believe in a world where anyone can lead a fit and fulfilling life.

CORE VALUES

FITNESS

We define fitness to include physical, emotional, mental, intellectual and spiritual health. We believe every individual has the power within themselves to implement their healthiest lifestyle and can make it a reality through awareness, education, and opportunity.

SERVICE FIRST

Everything we do is created out of compassion for a community’s unique needs and is tailored to each situation’s limitations and opportunities, with ongoing support that is anchored in integrity, consistency and superior customer service.

LIFELONG IMPACT

Children and adults can apply the skills, behaviors and mindsets they learn through our programs to overcome immediate personal, family and community obstacles, and turn them into a lifelong practice of wellness and positive growth.

INCLUSIVITY

Everyone, no matter their age, race, background, location, education or external circumstances, deserves equal opportunity to health and fitness through experiences, connections and pathways.

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Through our work, children and adults alike develop knowledge, skills, and values from direct experiences outside of their traditional academic, professional or everyday lives. They’re exposed to people, places and opportunities that they otherwise wouldn’t have. Additionally, kids create authentic childhood memories that will impact them for years to come.

OUR BEGINNING

The first opportunity for NEWfit originated in 2012 through Walter P. Carter Elementary/Middle School providing a fitness and creativity based, 8-week summer program.

The principal at that time opted to keep the recreational center, which was formally a Parks & Rec location, open for students and families where the summer program was housed. Later in the fall of 2012, due to a lack of athletic opportunities for elementary and middle school students, NEWfit developed its sports programs to deliver recreational sports and more importantly all the benefits that result both on and off the field for student athletes and school communities.

Over the next two years, NEWfit continued to develop its programming based on holistic wellness through various, workshops, classes, summer camps, and sports leagues. In that time, using a grassroots approach, NEWfit cultivated healthy partnerships with many schools throughout Baltimore. Committed to adding value to partner schools, with quality programming NEWfit Kids has had the fortune of consistent growth serving more school communities each year.

In the school year 2016-2017, through its wellness, recess, and sports programs NEWfit had the pleasure to partner and serve over 3,200 elementary & middle school students in over 70 Baltimore City public schools. Our immediate goal is to provide every child in Baltimore, through wellness and athletics, healthy experiences that will last a lifetime.

The recommendation from the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans published by the U.S. Department of Health and Social Services is at least one hour of physical activity each day. Physical activity facilitates a child’s cognitive development and academic success, and can be achieved in a variety of ways before, during, and after school.

WE CAN’T DO THIS ALONE.
